NYFW Recap: Spring / Summer 2022

September 16, 2021

New York Fashion Week is officially back!

After two seasons of digital collection releases due to the pandemic, NYFW: The Shows have returned! While audiences were smaller, and of course masked, designers’ Spring / Summer 2022 collections brought the same vigor, excitement and hope for the season ahead.

So how does Commando come into play here?

Every NYFW, Commando works with designers and their styling teams to provide them with undergarment and ready-to-wear styles that provide a flawless foundation for their seasonal runway debut.

To date, Commando has walked more than 150 runways from custom pieces to core styles such as our Classic Thong, Butter Hipster, Classic Control Brief and even our Faux Leather Leggings on occasion. This season, we were excited to be back on the runway working with designers such as Proenza Schouler, Jonathan Simkhai, Markarian, Eckhaus Latta and Telfar who used Commando kit staples, in addition to creating custom pieces for Prabal Gurung and Rodarte.

See below for our NYFW round-up and where Commando walked the runway this season!

Jonathan Simkhai

"Commando's luxury-technical intimates perfectly suit the Jonathan Simkhai runway collections, season after season. Their thoughtfully sourced fabrics are aligned with Jonathan Simkhai's sustainability values and accommodate the many different body-types we dress." - Jonathan Simkhai

Jonathan Simkhai’s collection boasted relaxed silhouettes in the form of simple slip dresses and easy sets. Pretty pastels and neutrals were married to asymmetrical cutout details and interesting layering, creating edge to otherwise classic pieces.

Commando’s Classic Thong was layered underneath the crochet and sheer fabrics, and our Tophats were used for a smoothing touch underneath the silkier styles.

Proenza Schouler

The Spring ‘22 collection from Proenza Schouler juxtaposed neutral pieces in gauzy and crochet textures with bright, optimistic gowns and playful layering Our Classic High Rise Panty served as the the perfect foundation for sheer looks, while our Classic Thong was worn underneath gowns for a line-free-finish.

PatBO

PatBO’s collection had us ready to pack our bags for a tropical holiday! Festive fringe, seriously detailed crochet, artistic polka-dots, graphic prints and feather details were the name of the game this season. Our Classic and Butter™ Thongs laid seamlessly under these romantic pieces and stayed hidden under the most daring of cut-out details.

Naeem Khan

We’re beginning to sense a vacation theme this season….

Bright colors and patterns with nods to old school glamour through intricate embellishment is what Naeem Khan does best. This season was no different, with ultra glamorous dresses and separates that had us ready for a night of dancing. Commando’s staple underbottoms, The Classic Thong and The Butter™ Hipster made both visible, and invisible, appearances during this chic presentation.

Markarian

The Spring ‘22 Markarian collection was a celebration of femininity and embodied the excitement of dressing up. After a year of zoom calls and suitable sweatpants, who wouldn’t be delighted to don a corset dress with a beautiful, voluminous sleeve just for the fun of it? The collection was a blend of  sparkles and shimmering textures, playful pastels, feminine prints and ladylike silhouettes. Our Butter™ and Classic Thongs created a flawless canvas for Markarian’s wonderful, feminine collection.

Eckhaus Latta

With a slew of deconstructed pieces and bare midriffs, Ekhaus Latta’s show delivered cool, sexy and edgy to the max. A neutral color palette with mixes of bright oranges and greens, and fabric textures ranging from crochet to leather made every look feel detailed and unique. The Butter™ Thong, Classic Bikini, Butter™ Hipster and even some of our Men’s Butter™ Boxer Briefs served as the base layer for this collection.

Custom Collaborations

Utilizing our signature fabrics and cutting-edge designs, we've worked in partnership with designers to help them create the perfect pieces that complement their collection. Months in advance of collection debuts, we work closely with designers and their team to create custom styles and prints made specifically for their runway presentation.

Once custom dye and print jobs are completed, all styles are cut and sewn in-house then handed off to designers for styling and finally, the runway!

Rodarte

This season we worked with Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte on custom underwear for their SS ‘22 Collection. The collection was a spectacular showing with beautiful movement and lightness to silhouettes that caught perfectly in the breeze alongside sheer and lace looks where Commando’s custom Lace and Classic Bikinis in blood orange and pink peeked through.

Prabal Gurung

"With this collection, we wanted our pieces to exhibit elements that are sculpted to the movement of the body. By partnering with Commando, we are able to incorporate these technical elements within the lens of utilitarianism in the classic Prabal Gurung spirit.” - Prabal Gurung

For the Prabal Gurung SS ’22 show, Commando created bralettes and leggings in a variety of colors and patterns. The collection sported checkered and floral prints, luxe textures like satin and feathers, and beautiful plays on proportions and volume. Our custom gingham printed bralette made a spotlight appearance on the runway.

After seeing the collections, we’re already planning our spring wardrobes which will include plenty of matching sets, bare midriffs, crochet, cutouts and sheer dresses in bold colors that will certainly require Commando undergarments to pull them off!
