6 Questions with Kerry

April 27, 2017

What is your motto?

I have two if that’s OK!  “Keep on moving forward.”  Even failing is better than being frozen in place.  And “ask for more.” What does that mean?  Ask for more from yourself, your clothes, your business, your colleagues, etc.  What is great (or not so great) can always be better.  I always want to push boundaries, question the status quo and ultimately design life-changing garments.

What is your greatest indulgence?

I particularly love shoes and coats, but the honest truth is that I have collected an amazing wardrobe while “researching market trends” around the US and throughout Europe.  Understanding fashion trends is important to designing for commando, and I get inspired by all interpretations of design from jewelry to ready-to-wear.

If you could be anywhere right at this moment, where would it be?

Having a picnic on Gouverneur Beach in St. Barths, drinking Rosé and eating cheese and charcuterie purchased at “Le Mini Mart.”  I’ve visited St. Barths just about every year for nearly two decades for my birthday month celebration. This low-key picnic is my favorite thing to do on this over-the-top island.

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

My curly hair! I hated it growing up, but I love it now. It's part of my signature look.

What most inspires you?

Looking at things in new and different ways with no preconceived notions about what is possible.  Inspiring possibilities come to me multiple times daily.  The challenging part is deciding which ones make sense to pursue.

What about you tends to surprise people?

I grew up on a farm. For a year or two, I was a member of 4-H and I even tried to raise my own calf for a contest.  “Tried” is an important word.  It’s the kind of banter that just doesn’t normally come up at my CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) cocktail parties!
